Falling Apart to Remember

About the Collection:

This collection unfolds like a diary. These paintings began in late January of 2020 as an exploration of layering multi media components with my minimal abstract compositions. It quickly became an intuitive process of expressionistic painting. As covid-19 rapidly became a global pandemic, the layering of multi elements took on a whole new level as the paintings began to “talk” to one another. Each brushstroke informing the next. Some pieces staying as quietly layered watercolor Plant Cells and others bursting forth with vibrant color block elements.

The color palette derives from my unconscious draw to primary color derivatives. Ochre, Rust red, indigo Blue…with pops of sage green, salmon pink with white space to allow a respite.

The name refers to the idea that sometimes you need to break into a million pieces to become something new, something better, to return to your self. As Glennon Doyle talks about in her book Untamed…”to dismember in order to remember”. My Plant Cell pieces grew out of a visual meditation for connectedness at a time in my life where I felt lost. I used to think these paintings were like the chaos I felt in my head. Now I see them as a call for connection. These pieces are the journey from the chaos to the calm.

There is a duality in this work. There was joy in the creating…a solace found here, while the world spins in chaos. There are rough edges and drips, and even splashes of gold mica. Some pieces tell the story of  personal growth  and some are a dream and hope for the future. They hold both tension and release. The duality of Life.
