About this Painting:

“There’s pansies, that’s for thought.” -Ophelia, Shakespeare’s Hamlet

Heart’s Ease is an abstract botanical based on the pansy flower. The title refers to one of the pansy’s many names. The pansy is a flower that despite its delicate appearance is hearty, withstanding even the coldest Spring, surviving light frosts and snow cover. Known as the “flower with faces” there is rich folklore and history on the pansy throughout art and literature. A beloved flower, symbolizing memories, loving thoughts and prosperity. Pansies are always some of the first flowers to grace our flowerbeds as the harsh Chicago winters melt. This piece has lush petal like strokes creating movement and depth. It sits nestled in a natural maple wood frame.

Heart’s Ease is part of the May 2021 collection, Signs of Life and  pairs beautifully with Love in Idleness.

About the Signs of Life Collection:

This collection of original abstracts features layered moments of movement, bold pops of color on earth tones, patterns of striped lines, shapes shifting between hard edges and gradient softness and imperfect drawings scratched away.

I aimed to portray how nature moves forward and comes rushing back to life despite the harshest of winters. The earth reflects this in the flowering trees, and green stalks shooting out of frigid soil…it truly feels like all life is reawakening and coming out of the dark. The collection is inspired by botanical forms and the shifting landscape of my home garden.  “Signs of Life” is also a nod to extra terrestrials as I’ve abstracted the natural life forms. We are and life is experiencing a new transmutation. Things are growing, unearthing, shedding, releasing, unfurling, grasping, reaching, birthing, sowing. The world is coming back to life after a pandemic, but it has changed.

We have changed.
