About this Painting:
This is a large square abstract acrylic painting done in loose painterly strokes. The palette of soft greens, blues, and salmon pink features tumbling abstract expressionistic shape and line. Mother and Child is part of the 2023 collection, “Places To Be“. While it doesn’t fit into the category of landscape, necessarily, it was created with this series, sharing the same color palette and space in the studio, absorbing the same music and sentiment this collection created. The shapes that emerged made me think of the blessed Mother Mary and baby Jesus. Ireland is nothing, if not a sacred place perpetuating all things Godly. This is my ode to the sacred cathedrals and catacombs we visited while there. An ode to motherhood…in my mind, the greatest place to be.
About the Places To Be Collection:
I began this 14 piece collection on the heels of a family trip to Ireland. I fell in love with our experience there…the epic landscapes, the familiarity of the people and the deep connection to the music. At this time my family also planted roots in a small town in Wisconsin, purchasing a cottage as our escape from daily life living close to the city. The cottage became my muse while I simultaneously painted this collection. And as I began my usual process of creating a body of abstract expressionist work…the line work, creating the shapes, finding the composition, the layering, drawing, the scratching away and layering again…landscapes began to emerge. Meanwhile, my daughter, who loves impressionist painters began sharing her favorite pieces and lo and behold, I found impressionist brushwork entering the process.
This collection is dear to my heart…a diary of the last year and a half and a love letter to the land. It’s an ode to nesting and nature. Finding refuge in the countryside, inspired by the rolling green hills of my ancestral Ireland and our cottage life in rural Wisconsin. Green patchwork windswept landscapes, blue skies and my favorite thing in the world…home.
